What is Tuberculosis and how is it tested

What is Tuberculosis and how is it tested?

It's a respiratory infection that affects the lungs. If left untreated, I believe it can be fatal. But if you treat it, it's really not that big of a deal. The test for TB consists of injecting a solution under the skin of the forearm. After 3 days, they "read" it to see if you've reacted. If you react, your whole forearm will turn red and they'll know that you're a carrier. It is possible to carry the antibodies for TB and never had symptoms. It's also possible to have a false positive test. When I get mine done, the red spot is usually about the size of a nickel, while everyone elses is not even noticeable. The nurses always tell me it's because I'm allergic to something in the solution, but it's not a positive test. I've had three TB tests in my life, once for college, and twice for different jobs that I've had working with kids. It's no big deal. :)

Beth G gave a very good answer. Its not a big deal getting tested. It does not really hurt either. They inject a solution by needle just under the first layer of your skin and form a bubble. You leave it alone for 3 days come back and see if it changed color. If you skin stays the normal color nothing is wrong but if it turns a red or irritated pinkish color they do further test and treat you for TB

A culture of mycobacterium from the pt's lung would be sufficient. And you have to use the acid-fast stain because of the waxy cell wall thanks to mycolic acid. Hope this helps. Your question was fairly vague, more detail would be fantastic

yes!

Not technically, but it should be! Anyone with any lung disorder should be banned from any chronic airway irritant of that type

Lima tuberculosis hospital. It's been abandoned since 1981, but could you still catch TB if you go inside?
Friends and I want to go check it out. My friend is worried we could catch Tuberculosis if we go check it out. Honestly, I'm more worried about getting caught. I highly doubt TB still thrives there, but is it possible? Even the tiniest bit?

What's the name of this book? Kid with tuberculosis

What's the name of this book? Kid with tuberculosis?
I read a book years ago in high school. It was about a young kid, probably high school age. He had a streak of gray hair and tuberculosis. I think he ran away, or was thinking about running away and then turned back. Trying to figure out his life if I remember right and what he wanted to do. I can't remember the name of the book. Does anyone know what it is called?

Your description sounds familiar. I'm not sure if this is it, but take a look at Nowhere to Call Home--the MC runs away from home (she's actually a girl but another major character is a guy) and I remember that someone in this book had TB. The kid with a streak of gray hair sounds really familiar and I'm thinking it might be in this book. The author is Cynthia de Felice
