Tuberculosis is primarily a lung disease, but the tubercules can also develop in other places in the body, such as the bones and liver. It's very serious, and while it can often be cured with strong antibiotics, it still can kill people. Especially since there are more drug-resistant strains of TB around, fatalities are on the rise again. Even when the drugs are effective, a cure can take a very long time - up to a couple of years

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection caused by a germ called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but they can also damage other parts of the body. TB spreads through the air when a person with TB of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes or talks. If you have been exposed, you should go to your doctor for tests. You are more likely to get TB if you have a weak immune system. Symptoms of TB in the lungs may include A bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer Weight loss Coughing up blood or mucus Weakness or fatigue Fever and chills Night sweats

Tuberculosis Science Homework

Tuberculosis Science Homework?
I have to do a research essay on tuberculosis and one of the questions that must be covered is Q). What natural barriers do cows have to stop them catching TB (Tuberculosis)? I can't seem to find any information on this on most sites, is it something to do with the fat cows have four stomachs? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Proteins released from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) during late logarithmic growth phase are often considered candidate components of immunogenic or autolysis markers. One such protein is isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD), a key regulatory enzyme in the citric acid cycle. We have evaluated the immunogenic properties of two isoforms of Mtb ICD and compared them with the control antigens heat-shock protein 60 and purified protein derivative (PPD). PPD lacks the sensitivity to distinguish between bacillus CalmetteĆ¢€“Guƃ©rin (BCG)-vaccinated and tuberculosis (TB)-infected populations, and, therefore, epidemiological relevance of PPD in BCG-vaccinated regions is debatable. We show that Mtb ICDs elicit a strong B cell response in TB-infected populations and can differentiate between healthy BCG-vaccinated populations and those with TB. The study population (n = 215) was categorized into different groups, namely, patients with fresh infection (n = 42), relapsed TB cases (n = 32), patients with extrapulmonary TB (n = 35), clinically healthy donors (n = 44), nontuberculous mycobacteria patients (n = 30), and non-TB patients (culture negative for acid-fast bacteria but carrying other infections, n = 32). The Mtb ICDs showed statistically significant antigenic distinction between healthy BCG-vaccinated controls and TB patients (P < 0.0001) and those with other infections. Although extrapulmonary infections could not be discriminated from healthy controls by heat-shock protein 60 (P = 0.2177), interestingly, the Mtb ICDs could significantly (P < 0.0001) do so. Our results highlight the immunodominant, immunosensitive, and immunospecific nature of Mtb ICDs and point to an unusual property of this tricarboxylic acid energy cycle enzyme

TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The bacteria are put into the air when a person with active TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs or sneezes. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected. When a person breathes in TB bacteria, the bacteria can settle in the lungs and begin to grow. From there, they can move through the blood to other parts of the body, such as the kidney, spine, and brain. TB in the lungs or throat can be infectious. This means that the bacteria can be spread to other people. TB in other parts of the body, such as the kidney or spine, is usually not infectious. People with active TB disease are most likely to spread it to people they spend time with every day. This includes family members, friends, and coworkers.
2 :
The answer is NO. When you already suffer with the active disease, smoking is highly discouraged as it likely to prolong the recovery or may even worsen the condition

why can't the immune system destroy bacteria of diseases such as tuberculosis

it has to do with what type of cell wall the bacteria has. such an example is salmonella, it has a lipid membrane that makes it resistant to stomach acid.
2 :
While we are constantly bombarded with micro- organisms every day, our immune system cannot always cope. Some micro-organisms have evolved to trick our immune system or bypass it. HIV is a case in point. TB does have a different cell wall structure. It is also very good at hiding and it grows slowly. Your immune system is very good at what it does, but if it gets compromised for any reason - it can weaken and let the guard down. Your immune system's fighting ability also depends on the amount of organisms it was presented - a high number of bacteria is harder to kill than a few. You know all those things your mom told you to do to stay healthy - eat right, get your rest, exercise and wash your hands. All of those things are also important to keeping your immune system in tip top condition, ready to battle the next intruder. Some people can ward off TB, others cannot. It just depends on the above factors.

M.tuberculosis , the causative organism for causing tuberculosis , is ingulfed in the body by macrophages . Once inside the macrophage the bacterium replicates with the phagosome by preventing phagosome - lysosome fusion . It has several mechanisms for blocking phagosome lysosome fusion through blockage of recruitment and assembly of proteins which mediate the fusion or inhibition of calcium signals . The genetic makeup of the host may influence the course of the disease . In some individuals with polymorphisms in the NRAMP1 gene , the disease may progress from this point without development of an effective immune response . NRAMP1 is a transmembrane protein found in endosomes and lysosomes that pumps divalent cations into the lysosome . This may have a role in generation of oxygen derived free radicals . After 3 weeks of infection a t-helper cell response against the bacterium is mounted . t-helper cells secrete IFN-gamma that makes the macrophages competent to contain the infection .In addition to stimulating macrophages it also orchestrates the development of caseous necrosis and granulomas
