G'day Miwa, Thank you for your question. Fever is one of the systemic symptoms of tb so it indicates it is getting worse. The TB patients should seek medical treatment urgently. I have attached sources for your reference. Regards

tuberculosis definately

Depends on the extent, and resistance of the agent.

All things equal, TB is "worse." However, there are some variables here. You don't mention the form of pneumonia. Is it viral, bacterial, fungal, aspiratory, mycoplasmal, etc. You also don't include the severity of each and the patients medical history and preexisting conditions. TB is the MOST COMMON bacterial respiratory disease in the WORLD. It is also extremely contagious in 98% of cases. But what I want to emphasize the most is since TB is bacterial, we have medications that are usually effective in treating TB unless the TB is "drug-resistant." Most bacterial infections are "curable." On the other hand, some forms of pneumonia are "treatable" but may not be "curable." Feel free to contact me for additional assistance. PS. Bubba's answer is absolutely correct

My girlfriend is scared. a tuberculosis question. please help us

My girlfriend is scared. a tuberculosis question. please help us!?
my girlfriend told me a few days ago that her two friends had visited someone in the hospital with Tuberculosis. When they came home, they spoke with my girlfriend, who was unaware they had visited someone with TB. After a small talk, the two friends told my girlfriend that they had visited someone with TB and that before they left the hospital, the doctor told them that since they visited the TB patient, they might want to be tested just in case they got it now! WTF???!!! THEN THE TWO DUMB BITCHES TELL MY GIRLFRIEND AFTER TALKING WITH HER!!!! We are all roomates in a house. However, the two dumb bitches live upstairs and my girlfriend and I live downstairs. The two dummies brushed it off and they said they aren't going to go get tested. My girlfriend is frieghtened now. I don't know what the hell to do. Should my girlfriend get tested or are we just overreacting? Do you think my girlfriend got contracted when The 2 dummies said they wore face masks when visiting. Please help

I can tell you right now TB is a weird disease. Look some stuff up about and you will know what i mean. I think she will be ok. But just to be safe make sure she gets tested. Oh and if she does have it they do have medicine for it. Just a couple of pills. No biggie. Good luck

She should get tested just to make sure and put your minds at rest. Unfortunately because of my work, I got infected by a patient. I did become very ill but the drugs worked fine and it went. You should not let your g/f worry about it and gt her tested. It's just a quick test. For the record, it is NOT just a couple of pills if you are infected with TB. IT is a 6 month course of tablets. I had to take 12 tablets for the 1st months, then less after that but even after I was cleared, I still had to take them for a while.

I doubt anything was transmitted. However to ease your girlfriends mind, go to the health dept. in your area and tell them she was exposed. They will hopefully test her for free. I really hope she will do this to ease her mind. Take care and good luck. PS: I'd move from the upstairs idiots....

TB is a contagious and serious respiratory disease that you hear a lot of people getting in other countries and has even been brought in from people coming in from these countries.. If they visited their friend in the hospital you are made to wear a special mask called a TB mask and even a isolation gown to protect you from the spread of the infection. They even put the patient in a special reverse isolation room that vents the air in special way cutting down on the germs in the air(since it is a air and droplet borne disease). I have taken care of TB patients as a nurse for several years and haven't caught TB. You must wear those protective clothing when going into visit a person with TB and always wash your hands when you leave. The only reason why the Dr. would want them to get a TB test is if the where in contact with this person before she was diagnosed or weren't wearing the isolation clothing while visiting. If you are concerned go to a doctor and have the test done. It is a simple skin test that takes about 2-3 days to read or a chest x-ray can also tell you if you have TB. If you need further information look it up on line

It is believed that most cases of post-primary (reactivation) tuberculosis develop in the apical and/or posterior segments of an upper lobe. In the typical case, the initial focus of disease enlarges and erodes into a bronchus, through which the partly liquefied necrotic tissue in the central portion of the lesion is drained, leaving a cavity. It is at this stage that most cases are identified clinically. In patients in whom treatment is not instituted or followed, or in whom the organisms are drug resistant, the disease may progress to involve the entire lobe. Such progression usually occurs over many months or years and is characterized by destruction and fibrosis of increasing amounts of lung parenchyma associated with one or more cavities of various size and variably severe bronchiectasis (the latter as a result of traction on the airway wall by fibrous tissue in the adjacent lung parenchyma). The end result is a markedly shrunken upper lobe. The radiographic appearance is that of an inhomogeneous opacity (ectatic airways and/or tuberculous cavities enveloped by fibrous tissue). The ipsilateral hilum is typically elevated, also as a result of traction by parenchymal fibrosis. Although usually caused by M. tuberculosis, infection by other mycobacterial species, as in this case, may result in the same sequence of events.

Paper on Leprosy or Tuberculosis

Paper on Leprosy or Tuberculosis?
Hey everybody, I had a quick question. I'm doing a presentation for my class on epidemics where I have to pick a disease and talk about how they affected/were affected by culture. So far, I've narrowed it down to Leprosy or Tuberculosis. I just wanted to get some input on which one has a stronger cultural background and would fit better/be able to write easy on in terms of culture and epidemics. Thanks so much!

I would definitely do TB..mainly because it was a scourge of a disease in the 19th and 20th centuries that caused thousands to die. Not only that, it was very contagious and if u were infected it was a death sentence. There was no way to combat it. For some strange reason, some ppl who cared for TB patients never got it. Although it was a bacterial infection of the lungs and the patients always coughed sputum and blood they were immune..dont know why. Maybe u should focus on that issue. FYI..Edgar Allen Poe watched several ppl die from this disease, (do the info for me) but I think his wives died of this but he never got it. This added to his sad and horrible life..I think this is right but would be good to put in your presentation for info
