If it's respiratory tuberculosis, the "classic" symptoms are coughing up phlegm for weeks, fever, night sweats, weight loss, possibly chest pain, loss of appetite.... Almost any organ system can be infected with TB, so there's a bunch of other possible symptoms

i don't know but i do have TB. it can be very contagious but mine like alot of peoples is dorminte. meaning that i have it but am not a carryer so it cannot be spread. unless i were to become very ill then it could become active.
2 :
I don't know either, but to the person above..you ARE a carrier. It is dormant, but you will always have it and your PPD test will always come back positive unless you've had treatment. It is transmitted from person to person by air droplets, meaning if someone sneezes or coughs and you breathe in their air drop, you could possibly contract it. Even idiots who spit on sidewalks can transmit it that way. I am sure there probably is only a guestimate out there on how many people contract it. Most people are like the person above and are only carrying the disease without any symptoms and many probably do not know they have it, unless they are in the medical profession or another career that requires them to get a PPD test every year (simple skin test that reacts if there is a presence of TB)

what do the tuberculosis pills do to the body

what do the tuberculosis pills do to the body?

You're on them long term (up to a year if your positive) 3 months if your around someone and you need it as a prophylaxis. They can be very damaging to the liver so you need to make sure youre getting your liver panels done as advised by your doctor. The rimpampin (I know I spelled that wrong) causes your tears, saliva to be orange colored so don't wear contacts and use old sheets, blankets to sleep with for the time youre on it. Were you diagnosed with it or do you think you have been exposed to it? You seem very concerned with this topic with all of your posts

they put some kind of liquid just under your skin on your arm and look at it in 3 or 4 days, I can't remember how long, and if you don't have a reaction, you don't have it and are not a carrier of it.
2 :
They'll inject a tiny amount (about a drop) of liquid under your skin, on your forearm. It does hurt a little as with most needlesticks, but the pain goes away real quick. Then you have to go back to them in two or three days so they can tell you if you've tested positive or not

How is it possible that the gentleman from Atlanta with tuberculosis didn't infect anyone, inlcuding his wife

How is it possible that the gentleman from Atlanta with tuberculosis didn't infect anyone, inlcuding his wife
He has what's know as Extremely Drug-resistent tuberculosis (or XDR-TB) which is highly contagious, yet no one that was on any one of his several airline flights nor his wife have tested positive.

even when exposed to TB there is a certain amount of time needed for the body to develop antibodies so as to test postitive...just testing negative so soon is not proof that they have not acquired the bacteria for the TB...he claims that his TB was not infectious at the time... I don't know that they have tested anyone involved yet...I have not heard of it..
2 :
He was contagious at the time he was flying. That is why the CDC was tracking down people on the flight to get them tested. It is not that his type of TB is more contagious than regular TB, it is that the drugs won't work against it. If a patient with a compromised immune system gets it (HIV, organ transplant, or oncology patients) they are as good as dead

How does Tuberculosis affect daily life

How does Tuberculosis affect daily life?

if it's in the infectious stage then the person must be quarantined for at least 3 months. if it's not infectious then it depends on the extent of damage to the lungs. he may get shortness of breath and other respiratory symptoms such as sleep apnea.. etc. but generally if he is treated early, lucky to have non-resistant strains, and have access to medication then he can live a pretty normal life
2 :
I agree with previous poster. Also to be borne in mind are the medication side effects. Most people with tuberculosis experience them ranging from mild to extreme. When I was taking tb meds I suffered a whole range of adverse reactions which continued after I stopped taking them. Some of the side effects actually mimicked the disease ie; tiredness and shortness of breath. I was later to find out I had been misdiagnosed

In the absence of medical treatment, during the active phase of tuberculosis there is a lot of stuff going on. The most recognizable is the cough with bloody sputum as a result of the tissue destruction in the lungs. Consequently, since the lungs are the site of loading oxygen into the blood, an infected individual will probably suffer from shortness of breath and fatigue (as mentioned previously). In addition, since a very intense immune response is taking place during the active phase of TB, lots of inflammatory molecules are being produced by the body which will lead to fever, inflammation (which further impairs breathing), and vasoconstriction (leading to high blood pressure and more trouble breathing). If the infection gets bad enough, and components of the bacteria enter into the blood stream, septic shock can also occur leading to such massive inflammation that vital organs shut down and the individual dies
