Mycobutin is an antibiotic--it targets the tuberculosis infection and fights it. Prednisolone is a steroid and it is given to reduce inflammation and make it easier to breathe. It is always given at the same time. Usually first the mycobutin, then the pred

Not until you tell us what country or state it's in. Do you have any idea how many towns there are with that name???
2 :
About 8 million new cases of TB disease occur each year in the world, and approximately 22,000 cases are reported each year in the United States. Also, 10 million to 15 million people in the United States are infected with TB and could develop TB disease in the future.

Confused about Tuberculosis test

Confused about Tuberculosis test?
I got a TB test today for my law enforcement medical exam and I am looking online to figure out test results. I am not sure, so 0 reaction to the injection, meaning no bump, no discoloration, no nothing means a negative test. and a reaction, bump, red color = positive test?

Maybe this will help you out.
2 :
Even if you have a positive test it doesn't mean that you have TB. It can mean that you are just a carrier. Being a carrier doesn't mean you are infectious either, it just means that you have it in your system, but not contagious or sick. My mom is a carrier, but doesn't have TB.
3 :
If the site of the test is swollen, red and a little hard that is a positve test. If no redness or redness is less than 2 mm that is negative. If you had a positve test you would have to have a chest x-ray to rule out TB. A positive would indicate you had at some time in your life been exposed to TB but it doesn't mean you have a current infection of TB.
4 :
Not exactly. The bump has to be read between 2-3 days after the injection, and the bump (reaction) has to be 15mm or larger in size to be considered a true reaction.
5 :
redness and swelling that is greater than 15cm across is a positive test in most people, the test needs to be read and documented by a medical professional between 48 to 72 hours after the test is administered. Different situations alter the size at which the test is read positive, that is why a medical professional needs to assess and read the test

Question about tuberculosis

Question about tuberculosis?
I recall learning in health class years ago, that the body's defense against tuberculosis bacteria was to encircle the bacteria and entrap the bacteria population in shells. I am unable to find anything to confirm this on the internet. Does anyone know the name of these "shells" and can you describe this process of disease defense. teejay, great answer, it will take a really superb answer by anyone else to beat your answer.

tuberculosis bacteria incite a cell mediated type of immune response. The "Shell" which you say is a "Caseating Granuloma" (which progresses to form "caseous necrosis") which is formed to localise and enclose the tuberculosis bacteria. This happens only in case of few bacterias.... tuberculosis, leprosy, etc. It occurs at site of infection and at the lymph node. Body's defence against tubercolosis organism is through our Macrophages and lymphocytes ( they are WHITE BLOOD CELLS) (our blood contains RED blood cells and White blood cells) Above mentioned two cells are important in forming an enclosure because the macrophages cannot kill the tuberculosis bacteria most of the times for its resistant structure. They remain inside macrophages then. So as a protective response this happens. However, when body immunity becomes low, the bacteria multiply in the granuloma and escape and spread.
