I'm volunteering at a hospital this summer and next week I have to get a TB skin test. I have a horrible fear of needles and pain, so I'm quite worried about whether or not there is much pain in getting a TB skin test. - Laur

Not really. It's like getting a shot. They inject something into your arm, and then you just let it sit for a day. Then, you need to go back in to have it read.

There are two different types of skin tests for TB, a Heaf test and a Mantoux test. I'm pretty sure the Heaf test is rarely used now so you will probably be getting the more recent Mantoux test. Does it hurt? I'll be totally honest with you, yes it does but only a little bit, I promise :) The test is given intradermally which means that the needle is injected just under the first layer of your skin, so it's not going in deep at all! It won't be like any other injection you've ever had. Most vaccinations you will have already experienced are given into your muscle so the needle is quite big, this is maybe why you have developed a fear of needles! However as the TB test is an injection into your dermis the needle is absolutely TINY! It will be a tiny sharp scratch, but the nurse giving the injection may take about 10 seconds or so before she removes the needle, this is just because he or she will need to make sure they are injecting into the right place. So please don't panic, it probably won't hurt as much as other injections you have had in the past, but it's done in a slightly different way. Just take a deep breath and relax!! If you are tense and anxious it will probably be worse. Make sure you treat yourself afterwards!! And well done you for volunteering at the hospital, it's a very rewarding and commendable thing to do. :-) Good Luck!
