TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberulosis, a gram positive bacteria. Although not really a significant problem in the U.S. and western countries, this disease is commonly contracted through airborne contact with people who are infected. There is no really effective way of preventing the disease, as the current vaccine based on BCG antigen is not very protective. Diagnosis is through a ppd skin test and chest X-ray for signs of granulomas (active disease). Treatment is rifampin and INH
